BIOGRAPHY
Nicholas Fahrenkrug is an American baritone from Davenport, Iowa. He recently covered Guglielmo in Così fan tutte at Sarasota Opera and returned as a member of the Sarasota Opera Studio for the 2025–2026 season, covering Danilo in The Merry Widow. In summer 2026, he joins Central City Opera as an Apprentice Artist where he will cover Horace Tabor in The Ballad of Baby Doe and perform the role of Denver Politician. He has performed with countless companies and orchestras across the United States, including Sarasota Opera, Opera Philadelphia, Odyssey Opera, Boston Youth Symphony Orchestra, First Presbyterian Period Orchestra, Seagle Festival, and Nightingale Vocal Ensemble.
During the 2025 season, he made his Odyssey Opera debut as Philo and Second Geezer in Mark Adamo’s Lysistrata. Conducted by Gil Rose and directed by the composer, the production marked Boston’s first staging of the work and was recorded for CD release by Pentatone, scheduled for release this fall. He also appeared with Opera Philadelphia in two concert programs featuring the Opera Philadelphia Chorus and the historic Wanamaker Organ, presenting a wide range of repertoire. Additionally, he performed with the Boston Youth Symphony Orchestra in Verdi’s Don Carlo as a Deputy and chorus member.
Nicholas has served as an outreach artist with Seagle Festival, performing in touring children’s operas and leading classroom discussions about opera for K–12 students. As an Emerging Artist at Seagle, he performed the roles of Hawkins Fuller (Fellow Travelers) and Matt (The Fantasticks), and premiered the role of James Duffy in Richard Wargo’s At That Hour. Nicholas holds a Master of Music in Vocal Performance from Louisiana State University, where he studied with Dennis Jesse and was a Turner-Fischer Scholar. He co-founded the Apollo Duo with Greek pianist Eleonora Apostolidi, touring Schubert’s Die schöne Müllerin throughout the Midwest and South. He received a Bachelor of Music in Vocal Performance from the Lawrence University Conservatory, studying under John T. Gates. During his studies, he performed roles including Conte Almaviva (Le nozze di Figaro), Raimbaud (Le comte Ory), Harlekin (Ariadne auf Naxos), Marquis de la Force (Dialogues des Carmélites), Marco (Gianni Schicchi), Matt (The Fantasticks), Guglielmo (Così fan tutte), Hawkins Fuller (Fellow Travelers), and Giulio Cesare (Giulio Cesare).
Equally active on the concert stage, he recently appeared as baritone soloist in Bach’s BWV 62 and Charpentier’s Magnificat, H.73 with the First Presbyterian Period Orchestra of Philadelphia. He has also performed extensively with Nightingale Vocal Ensemble, a Boston-based contemporary chamber ensemble conducted by Benjamin Perry, performing in several world and East Coast premieres.
